July, 2024 – June, 2025

Position Title: Communications and Engagement Intern

Reports To: Vice President of Education, with direct supervision from Education department staff

Department: Education

Hours and Duration: 5-8 hours/week, July, 2024 through June, 2025. Start/end dates and weekly schedule to be determined according to intern’s availability.

Stipend: $18.76/hour

The Commonwealth Club World Affairs (CCWA) civics education initiative, Creating Citizens offers interactive programs and opportunities for students, young adults, and educators. We are seeking a creative and energetic college student to help us grow our audiences and develop new ways to excite and engage them in our mission of educating and inspiring youth to be active, informed participants in our national democracy.

One focus for the Communications and Engagement Intern will be youth audiences, ensuring that Creating Citizens activities speak to the needs and interests of Gen Z. As a member of a small team, they will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to our planning and operations. A unique feature of the internship is the spring capstone project: during the second semester, with supervision from Education staff, the intern will propose and implement a project of their choosing which builds on the core work of Creating Citizens and advances their own educational and professional goals.

Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the primary author and coordinator for our social media platforms, monthly newsletter, and periodic marketing emails
  • Posting regularly and often; writing clever and inspiring content that connects diverse audiences with our mission and grows our audience base
  • Supporting Creating Citizens programs, including School Field Trips, biannual Speaker Series at UC Berkeley, and Youth Advisory Committee
  • Organizing audience and participant feedback; may be asked to offer insights to support strategic decision-making
  • Assisting at live events when scheduling permits

This is an ideal position for a student who:

  • Is interested in the topics covered by Creating Citizens, such as education, civics, civil dialogue, political science, public policy, or international relations
  • Is a strong writer and communicator
  • Understands how to strategically engage youth in online platforms and how to optimize visibility of content; has experience creating and publishing compelling content
  • Loves to come up with clever ways to promote ideas and causes they feel passionate about, especially among their peers
  • Is excited about sharing CCWA with others
  • Is organized, reliable, flexible, and collaborative
  • Knows or can quickly learn new software platforms for communications, social media, and email
  • Wants to learn about nonprofit organizations and how they work
  • Likes being part of a small, creative team
  • Has a good sense of humor

The Intern will be expected to coordinate closely with staff to meet goals. They will attend weekly Education department meetings, may participate in Education events as their interest and time allow, and will be able to attend unlimited CCWA programs free of charge.

How to Apply
Submit a resume and brief cover letter to edujobs@commonwealthclub.org. Resume review will begin immediately and continue until the internship is filled.
